Common questions about retail and space design — and how we think about them.
A few of the questions we're asked most often about designing successful retail spaces.
What are the key points of space design?
The overall design of a space should align with its intended use, its functional requirements, and the psychological needs of its users. Seven points matter most:
- Colour — rationally use colour contrast and harmony. A unified interior tone, varied yet consistent, can achieve the strongest effect; the right scale of colour depends on each function.
- Modelling — form is fundamental to space and expresses the designer's aesthetic. Modern interiors increasingly emphasise innovation in shape, treated artistically and technically.
- Size — public activity spaces should be larger; rest areas can be smaller; service spaces as compact as practical. Mind the proportional relationships and transitions between sections.
- Hierarchy — distinguish primary from secondary. Highlight the main wall and key display surfaces; keep auxiliary parts simpler so they don't overshadow the focus or create a sense of chaos.
- Decoration — once functional needs are met, decoration (lighting, wall finishes, furniture) can be used to enhance atmosphere and beautify the environment.
- Proportion — one of the key factors of beauty: the ratio of length, width and height. Aim for harmony, variation, accuracy, balance, flexibility and rhythm.
- Atmosphere — the comprehensive sensory and psychological experience people perceive, determined by the external features of the space and its interior decoration and layout.
How do you design a brand image?
Designing a brand image is a unique and challenging task that draws on multiple disciplines — marketing, innovation and technology — to build a powerful and distinctive identity.
The goal is a brand image that is visually striking, emotionally resonant and instantly recognisable. Through creative thinking and considered design, the identity is shaped to express the brand's character consistently — and then carried faithfully into every physical touchpoint, from packaging to the store environment itself.
What does successful brand design look like?
Design is a crucial factor in helping a business gain competitive advantage, enhance its image, earn consumer loyalty, and achieve its commercial objectives.
A successful design does more than attract consumers — it evokes positive emotions, making people feel satisfied when they make a purchase. In a retail setting, that means a space and brand environment that feels considered and effortless: drawing customers in, guiding them naturally, and leaving a lasting, positive impression.
